DTS Grads Recognized for Effective Teaching

Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary has named four DTS graduates among the twelve most effective English speaking preachers in the world. Two years ago, the Kyle Lake Center for Effective Preaching surveyed more than 500 professors of homelitics for their input on requirements to determine the most effective preachers.

The criteria established for this new survey included questions concerning the Biblical and exegetical study of the Scriptures, proper hermeneutic of God’s Word, the effectiveness of the preacher’s life and ministry demonstrating authenticity, integrity, and a commitment to the body of Christ, and effective and skillful communication of the central truth(s) of the Bible.

Among the twelve of this year’s most effective preachers, four DTS alumni were recognized.

Listed by graduating class, they are:

Haddon Robinson (ThM, 1955)
Dr. Robinson served as the Harold John Ockenga distinguished professor of preaching at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He wrote more than a dozen books, including his hallmark text, Biblical Preaching, which is still used by seminaries and Bible colleges around the world. Dr. Robinson, longtime faculty member, former President of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and one of the world’s foremost experts in Biblical preaching, went to be with the Lord on July 22, 2017.

Charles Swindoll (CTH, 1963)
Dr. Swindoll has devoted his life to the accurate, practical teaching and application of God’s Word and his grace. A pastor at heart, Chuck has served as the founder and senior pastor-teacher of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas. His leadership as president and now chancellor of DTS has helped prepare and equip a new generation for ministry. Chuck and his wife Cynthia, have four grown children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Tony Evans (ThM, 1976; ThD, 1982)
Dr. Evans has served as the senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for over forty years, witnessing its growth from ten people in 1976 to now over 10,000 congregants with 100 plus ministries. Dr. Evans has authored over 100 books, booklets and Bible studies including Kingdom ManOneness EmbracedThe Kingdom AgendaMarriage Matters, and Victory in Spiritual Warfare. Dr. Evans serves as chaplain for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, a ministry he has done for over thirty years. He is also the former chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys.

Andy Stanley (ThM, 1985)
Pastor Stanley is the senior pastor of North Point Community Church, Buckhead Church, Browns Bridge Church, Gwinnett Church, Woodstock City Church, and Decatur City Church. He is also the founder of North Point Ministries, which is a worldwide Christian organization. Pastor Stanley has authored several books including  How to Be Rich, When Work & Family Collide, Deep & Wide, and The New Rules for Love, Sex & Dating. He and his wife, Sandra, have three grown children, and live near Atlanta.

President of DTS, Dr. Mark Bailey, weighed in with these words: “With the privilege I have to serve our great seminary, my congratulations to these four friends who represent the Lord and DTS so well in their proclamation of God’s Word—all unique and authentic with their own styles and gifting.”

DTS continues to stay committed to saturate students in Scripture and enamor them with the beauty of Christ so that they become marked as a herald of the Gospel to a world in need. Our hope is to continue to produce Bible expositors who are qualified to serve God effectively as pastors, missionaries, or leaders in other areas of vocational Christian ministry.
